英语单词故事-你知道“妻管严”用英语怎么说吗?

1.hen-pecked:这个词由两部分构成,“hen”是“母鸡”,“peck”是“咬、啄”的意思,hen-pecked就是指有些弱小的公鸡经常 被母鸡啄伤,受到母鸡的“欺负”,于是英语里经常用这个词来形容那些“怕太太”、“惧内”的丈夫,形象生动不亚于汉语原文。

    2. be tired to one’s apron strings:在这个短语中, apron strings指的是女人围裙上的腰带,字面意思就是“被系某人的围裙上”。其真正含义是指某个男人受到妻子(或母亲)的影响和控制(be strongly influenced and controlled by one’s mother or wife)。比如:乔治得了“妻管严”,他从来不和我们出去玩。可以译为:George never comes out with the rest of us, for he's tied to his wife's apron strings.

    3. under the petticoat government: petticoat是指女性的衬裙,under the petticoat government引申为在“女人的管辖之下”(government by women,, whether in politics or domestic affairs.)。这个词经常指女人当权或掌政,如A little more petticoat government and perhaps countries would not so easily become involved in wars.如果政坛上多些女性执政,或许很多国家就不会那么轻易地卷入战火了。当然也很可以指家庭事务中男人惧怕妻子,一切听妻子的。
